How Old Shang-Chi Is In His MCU Movie | Screen Rant

Here's how old Shang-Chi is in his solo MCU movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Played by Simu Liu, Shang-Chi is one of the new roster of heroes in the MCU's Phase 4, with his movie setting him up not only as an incredibly skilled and powerful martial artist (with and without the Ten Rings themselves), but also a key figure in future movies. Following on from his solo movie, Shang-Chi is now an Avenger, which means he should be around the MCU for a long time yet.

For Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, though, his past is just as important as his future, if not more so. The 2021 film dives into his complicated family history with father Wenwu (Tony Leong), the real Mandarin, and develops Shang-Chi as both a person and a fighter. Given he already has considerable martial arts abilities art the time viewers meet them, then they could be forgiven for thinking he's perhaps older than he actually is, with Shang-Chi trained from a young age and incredibly experienced already.

The exact year of Shang-Chi's birth isn't stated in Legend of the Ten Rings, but it at least has to be after 1996, which is when Wenwu first met Shang-Chi's mother, Ying Li (Fala Chen). However, it's reasonable to assume it was a few years later that Shang-Chi himself was born: he states he left for America when he was 14-years-old, and had been there for 10 years by the time the present-day events of the movie take place. That means Shang-Chi is 24-years-old in his MCU movie (with Liu himself 32), assuming he lived through Thanos' Snap, and was born in either mid/late-1999 or early-2000. If Shang-Chi had been snapped, then it would've taken place when he was around 18-19, but there's nothing concrete to suggest that was the case.

According to the MCU timeline on Disney+, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings takes place after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which itself was around six months after Avengers: Endgame. This would fit with Shang-Chi's story, placing it around April 2024, which is when the Qingming festival takes place and the gate to Ta Lo is opened. Sticking with that timeline, then it would fit with Shang-Chi leaving for America around 2014, having been born roughly around the turn of the Millennium. If Shang-Chi were born any earlier - say, at the beginning of his parents' relationship - then that would cause some greater timeline issues, but the presentation in the movie, and so Shang-Chi's age, mostly works.

Even then, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' timeline isn't perfect. Brie Larson's Captain Marvel appears in Shang-Chi's credits scene with much longer hair than she had in Endgame, which would suggest a time skip the movie doesn't really allow for. But aside from that, Shang-Chi's age in his MCU movie fits as being in his mid-20s. That makes him much younger than many of the previous main Avengers - Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) was in his 40s, Captain America (Chris Evans) was technically well over 100-years-old by the end of Endgame, and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is over 1,000-years-old - although still several years older than the likes of Spider-Man (Tom Holland). And Shang-Chi's age only makes his skills more impressive, and suggests there's plenty more he can learn, meaning he can become even more powerful in the MCU's future.
