A new image from The Matrix Resurrections reveals Jonathan Groff's character taking on Neo. The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth film in The Matrix franchise, taking place some 18 years since the last movie, The Matrix Revolutions, was released in 2003. Directed by Lana Wachowski, the film again stars Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, the original trilogy stars. Joining the cast is Jessica Henwick, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Christina Ricci, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Jada Pinkett Smith returning as Niobe.
Henwick was most recently seen in the Netflix/Marvel show Iron Fist and voices Elle in Blade Runner: Black Lotus animated series. Abdul-Mateen II is perhaps best known as Black Manta in the Aquaman films, while Neil Patrick Harris has a long-established career, from How I Met Your Mother to Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Groff has appeared as King George in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton and the lead FBI investigator in David Fincher's MindHunter series on Netflix. Ricci previously worked with Lana Wachowski in her 2008 film Speed Racer, while Chopra Jonas recently starred in the Netflix original film The White Tiger.
Today, EW released new info and images from The Matrix Resurrections, including one that features Groff "sparring" with Keanu Reeves' Neo. Up to this point, little is known about Groff's character, including his name, but it appears he'll be doing more than just sitting in a chair wearing nice clothes. The image is reminiscent of Neo's early martial arts fighting from the first The Matrix film, showing off the kind of high-flying kick that the series is known for. Take a look at the full image below:
Reeves is no stranger to action, having grown from playing mostly aloof stoner-types to refined action heroes. The actor tested his mettle with such roles early on with 1991's Point Break and 1994's Speed before going full martial-arts-cyber-hero in 1999's The Matrix and its sequels. Since that time, Reeves redefined his action star status again, taking on the role of John Wick in the self-titled series, which has brought the actor into a whole new world of the genre. Reeves is finishing up filming on John Wick: Chapter 4 and is already set to jump into a fifth film shortly after.
While the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections has shown off some of the stunts, action, and technological wizardry that made the original series so unique, there's still more to be revealed as this new image teases. It's unclear just how similar in volume and style the action will be in Resurrections compared to the original films, but Reeves and the rest of the cast look more than able to handle whatever is thrown their way. For audiences, a return to The Matrix means the expectation of over-the-top martial arts action and gunplay, which Resurrections appears to be teeing up.
