According to a new report from Game Informer, Rockstar reused a bunch of ideas and systems from the canceled Bully 2 for Red Dead Redemption 2. Some of the most defining features of Rockstar's beloved western started almost a decade prior in a completely different game. Many have applauded the AI and the feeling of being in a living world in Red Dead Redemption 2 and it's almost entirely thanks to Bully 2 that this was possible.
While the game was canceled roughly a decade ago, recent rumors have suggested that Bully 2 is happening. According to prominent leaker Tom Henderson, the game was going to potentially be featured at The Game Awards, but plans changed. Henderson noted his sources have actually seen the game in action, which instilled his confidence in his reporting. However, other sources have stated that they have no idea if the game exists and haven't heard anything on their end.
Whether or not it's happening is a mystery, but a new Game Informer article has shared the details of what could've been had Bully 2 released when originally planned. The now-canceled Bully 2 featured a system that allowed NPCs to remember the player for their actions. If the player pranked an NPC, that character would remember that and act accordingly in the future. It was proposed that this could even lead to relationships with certain NPCs, but it's unclear if this was ever implemented into the game. Of course, a lot of this ended up in Red Dead Redemption 2 later on. If Arthur robs a store, the shopkeeper will remember and refuse to serve Arthur the next time he comes back.
Similarly, the team at Rockstar New England was using technology to create grass that would progressively grow and lower if mowed. The team even implemented a more realistic system for breaking glass when players broke into homes, something that would make its way into Max Payne 3 when shooting windows. As of a few years ago, a Bully 2 build still existed within Rockstar and is being used as reference material for other projects. It's unknown whether or not Rockstar will ever revisit the project or if it will stay dead forever.
Some industry insiders believe the series could return via a Bully remaster. Given Rockstar is reportedly looking into remastering some of its older games, it seems like there's a good chance of this happening. Rockstar could test the waters with a remaster and see if a sequel is worth greenlighting as a result, but it may be a long time before this ever happens. Nevertheless, it sounds like Bully 2 would've been an incredibly ambitious game, and it's still left an indelible mark on projects like Red Dead Redemption 2.
