Waiting For Google's December Pixel Update? You'll Need To Keep Waiting

The Pixel 6 is the latest phone made by Google and it should get updates before anything else, but the expected December update never arrived for most owners and it seems the wait will continue. While this is frustrating news for many, there is little that can be done about it and the rollout was paused for a good reason so it's better to be patient rather than to attempt to sideload the update.

The latest Pixel Feature Drop was announced on December 6, 2021, touting several improvements and bug fixes. Most notably, a phantom calling issue, as well as slow 5g, were both resolved. The ultra-wideband capability of the Pixel 6 series was also unlocked allowing the use of digital car keys and enabling directional control of Nearby Share file transfers. The Quick Tap to Snap feature to allow the double tap on the back to open the Snapchat camera was also part of this update. Conversation mode improvements might have been eagerly anticipated by users with hearing loss and the list goes on with even more features.

Google's December Pixel Feature Drop was an important one, although not as critical as the November update that eased fingerprint sensor troubles, however, soon after beginning the rollout, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users began reporting problems. Shortly after that, reports started coming that the rollout seemed to be happening very slow, indicating Google might have been throttling or even pausing the updates immediately. The official statement has now appeared with Google announcing that the rollout has been paused and the next update is expected to arrive by late January.

Google admitted that the problem that resulted in pausing the rollout has to do with connectivity trouble for some Pixel 6 owners. Apparently, users were reporting that calls were dropping or disconnecting. The irony is that correcting problems with 5g connections was supposed to be part of the update but apparently it made things worse. The update that is coming in January should include all of the added features and fixes from the December Pixel Feature Drop, along with a solution for this new problem.

For anyone that received the December software update and is having problems with calls dropping, it's possible to revert to factory settings and install the previous version of the system software but that isn't easy. Downgrading a Pixel 6 series phone requires backing up data, performing a factory reset, then flashing the software with the Android Flash Tool, which requires developer mode and a wired connection to a computer. This is easier than it used to be, however, most users should not attempt this unless comfortable with flashing updates. The Pixel 6 is a fantastic phone and it's unfortunate that a software glitch is ruining the experience for some people, however, the resolution will arrive in the new year.
