Grey's Anatomy/Euphoria Crossover Fan Theory Debunked By Star

Euphoria star Eric Dane debunked a fan theory that his character Cal would be a catalyst for a subtle Grey's Anatomy crossover. Sam Levinson's HBO drama starring Zendaya is in the midst of season 2. While providing insights into each character's complicated back story, there has been a focus on the teenage life of Cal, the troubled father of Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi).

Currently, Euphoria has been sharing flashbacks of young Cal (Elias Kacavas), particularly focused on his friendship with a boy named Derek (Henry Eikenberry). In the most recent episode, the pair take a trip to a gay bar and share a kiss. Cal's hope for any future relationship with Derek ends when Cal's girlfriend calls him the following day to tell him that she is pregnant. Grey's Anatomy fans were quick to notice the name of Cal's best friend, and wonder if it could be an homage to Dane's old friend Derek Shepherd, AKA McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey), back from his days of portraying Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy.

Dane recently spoke to E! Online to crush any fans' dreams of a Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy crossover. The actor explains that the name Derek is "purely coincidence" and had nothing to do with Shonda Rhimes' long-running show. So viewers shouldn't expect Dempsey to appear in the present Euphoria timeline as Derek. However, Cal's complicated backstory is sure to result in some intense future scenes.

Euphoria fans have been a bit conflicted about the show attempting to elicit sympathy from viewers toward Cal. His character is violent and frankly dangerous, putting his personal needs and urges over the well-being of others. But Dane believes the backstory was crucial to fans fully understanding the character. He said, "I think it might add sort of a human element to Cal, whereas before you were having a tough time seeing that."

HBO is dropping episodes of Euphoria weekly, so there are still a lot of unanswered questions in Cal's story. Mainly, what will come of the NSFW tape he made of him and Jules (Hunter Schafer) that ended up in the hands of Maddy (Alexa Demie)? Also, will Nate ever be able to come to terms with the trauma his dad caused him in order to prevent himself from repeating the same patterns? It looks like fans will need to just keep watching Euphoria season 2 to find out more. Just don't expect a Dempsey cameo anytime soon.
