Peacemaker Episode 6 Is Wildest One Yet, Says James Gunn

Warning: Contains spoilers for Peacemaker episode 5.

Writer/director James Gunn teases Peacemaker episode 6, “Murn After Reading,” will be the series’ wildest entry yet. Following last summer’s R-rated The Suicide Squad, Gunn's new spin-off series continues the DCEU misadventures of John Cena’s “douchey Captain America” in Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. In addition to Cena, the spinoff’s cast also includes Jennifer Holland, Emilia Holland, Danielle Brooks, Chukwudi Iwuji, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, and Nhut Le.

Peacemaker’s first episode piggybacks off of The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene—which reveals Peacemaker survived the events on Corto Maltese and is needed by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and A.R.G.U.S. to “save the f----ing world.” Instead of “Starfish,” this time around, the operation is dubbed “Butterfly” and the team attempts to thwart a suspected alien invasion. However, as the series has progressed, things have become all the more unpredictable—from obscure dance routines to the brutal introduction of Charlie the Gorilla in episode 5.

Gunn recently took to Twitter to tease that Peacemaker episode 6 will be its wildest one yet. While explaining the series’ recent credits song is DYNAZTY’s “The Human Paradox," he said he can’t wait for next week. Check out the tweet below:

In episode 4, “The Choad Less Traveled,” it’s revealed to audiences that Clemson Murn (Iwuji), the increasingly-in-touch-with-his-feeling mercenary in charge of Operation Butterfly, is a Butterfly working against the other Butterflies. At the end of episode 5, Leota Adebayo (Brooks)—who is secretly Waller’s daughter—uses Peacemaker’s x-ray helmet and discovers that which the audience already knows. The resulting sequence sees a feral Murn chase Adebayo before the credits roll to DYNAZTY, leaving her fate unknown. Peacemaker episode 6 is sure to reveal more about the Butterflies not-so-sinister and/or conflicting motives.

Before Peacemaker debuted on HBO Max, the first seven episodes were sent to critics. Gunn recently revealed that he refused to send out the show’s eighth episode because it is his favorite and “just too many things happen in episode eight that I just could not let it get out there.” If Peacemaker’s recent episodes are any indication, season 1 will continue to ramp up and get wilder in the final stretch. So far, the series has generated a great deal of positive buzz, which bodes well for both Peacemaker season 2 and various other DCEU projects for Gunn. That being said, it seems likely Peacemaker will set up another “Gunn-Verse” spin-off equipped with delightful episode titles, dance routines, quotable dialogue, and a jukebox-worthy soundtrack.
