The release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus offers a new origin story for the playable main character, thanks to Arceus snatching them from a distant future. Unlike past titles, where a Pokémon journey begins in the safety of the main character's home, Pokémon Legends: Arceus starts with the character falling through time and space. While many might suspect the main character would herald from the Sinnoh region Hisui grows into, there are several clues that indicate this may not be the case.
[Warning: Spoilers for Pokémon Legends: Arceus are below.]
Pokémon Legends: Arceus put a new twist on the previously predictable storylines and gameplay found in most main series Pokémon games. Instead of battling Gym Leaders to have a chance at becoming a region Champion, or tackling antagonist teams with predictable evil motives, players instead travel through open-world-inspired locations to quell frenzied Pokémon Nobles. While the progression of the main story is similarly linear compared to older titles in the series, the ability to explore and complete side quests immediately expands gameplay, giving players a very different journey with their Pokémon companions.
From the opening cutscene in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it is clear the main character isn't from the time period of the Hisui region. With a modern hairstyle, t-shirt, and shorts, it seems the character has been pulled right from the bed of their original timeline to do Arceus' bidding. Thanks to similar styles in character models, it may seem as if the main character could be from the Galar region. Pokémon Legends: Arceus has kept many of the art choices used in Pokémon Sword and Shield, with stylized faces and simplified expressions.
However, a closer look at the main character's t-shirt at the start of the game may give more clues to their original region. The white shirt is embossed with a logo many may find familiar, thanks to its appearance in Pokémon X and Y as one of the t-shirt choices that can be worn in a wide range of colors. This shirt logo isn't found in Galar, which uses more complex patterns and designs for clothing choices. The t-shirt and the character's age, which is stated to be 15 years at the time of Pokémon Legends: Arceus' events, could suggest this character is a seasoned trainer from the Kalos region. They could even be a recent Kalos Champion Arceus has deemed worthy of the task it needs to be accomplished.
The inclusion of content from the Kalos region could potentially mean further additions from Pokémon X and Y, including Kalos Pokémon and Mega Evolution, could be added as DLC to Pokémon Legends: Arceus at a future time, though nothing of this nature has currently been covered by Nintendo or Game Freak. However, the possibility could be exciting for fans who missed the Kalos starters in Pokémon Sword and Shield, as well as giving players more background information on who Pokémon Legends: Arceus' main character is and how they became the talented trainer seen in the game's narrative.
