Doctor Who Spring Special Easter Release Date Confirmed By BBC

The BBC officially confirms the Doctor Who Spring Special will release on Easter. Jodie Whittaker's tenure as the Thirteenth Doctor is coming to an end, but not through a conventional season of Doctor Who; instead, this year the BBC is releasing three specials, so she can bow out in style. Marketing is finally beginning for the Doctor Who Spring Special, which viewers have long assumed would air over Easter weekend.

"Legend of the Sea Devils" will bring back a monster from the original series, the Sea Devils - an evolutionary offshoot of a reptilian race who ruled the Earth in prehistoric times. According to an official synopsis, the Doctor and her friends will travel back to 19th-century China, where a small coastal village is under threat - both from the real-life pirate queen Madame Ching and from the colony of Sea Devils she's unwittingly awoken. So far, marketing has focused on what promises to be a stunning Doctor WHO Sea Devil redesign, but the BBC has been slow to confirm any details - including a release date.

Now, the BBC takes to Twitter to confirm the Doctor Who Spring Special will air on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. BBC America tends to release episodes on the same date, so viewers can be confident "Legend of the Sea Devils" will be airing internationally on April 17 as well. Exact times have yet to be confirmed, but the Spring Special will surely be a major part of the BBC's Easter programming. This is actually only the second time a Doctor Who special has aired on Easter Sunday, making it quite an unusual slot for the show, so it will be exciting to see how it performs. The timing of the announcement is a little strange, coming two days after the anniversary of Doctor Who's 2005 revival. Fans assumed the release date would be confirmed on the anniversary, complete with a trailer drop, but instead the BBC settled for publishing digital copies of images from "Legend of the Sea Devils" that had already been released to British print magazines. The missed marketing opportunity even prompted coverage in U.K. tabloid press.

Still, at least viewers now know when the Doctor's story will continue. "Legend of the Sea Devil" is expected to be a major step in the Thirteenth Doctor's character arc, focused on the romance between the Doctor and companion Yaz Khan (a relationship named "Thasmin" by fans). Although the current Doctor Who companion romance was unplanned, it's nonetheless been integrated into the tail-end of the Whittaker era, and is expected to provide a rich source of drama as the Thirteenth Doctor's time comes to an end in Doctor Who.
