A new developer update for the upcoming, highly-anticipated remake of the survival horror game Dead Space has revealed a new system that will play a role in determining Issac Clarke's dialogue and how both his emotional state and stamina will affect it. EA Motive officially revealed the Dead Space remake in 2021 at EA Play Live and promised to improve and enhance the original story of the classic game while maintaining its original integrity. Though essentially a reiteration of the original Dead Space, the remake will feature updated and expanded dismemberment mechanics, cut content from the sequels, the return of Issac's voice actor, and the addition of modern graphics that will improve the experience.
A new Dead Space title has been requested by fans for almost a decade following the disappointing release of the action-oriented Dead Space 3. Influenced by Resident Evil 4, the first two Dead Space entries are known for their claustrophobic levels and spine-chilling sound design that creates an immersive horror experience. Fans ultimately seem excited to re-experience its classic locations with upgraded generation graphics and improvements to many of its core mechanics. To give players a sneak peek, EA Motive showed off some side-by-side comparison screenshots of the original Dead Space game and its newest rendition, highlighting some of the environmental differences players can expect to see. Though similar, fans can look forward to more depth and detail that will enhance gameplay.
As reported by IGN, during a new live stream about the Dead Space remake that showcased its new audio features, EA Motive revealed the A.L.I.V.E. system, which is an extensive audio feature that encompasses "all components of Isaac's breathing and heart rate, vocal excursions, and dialogue influenced by a variety of driving gameplay features." A.L.I.V.E. is an acronym with different pillars that stand for Adrenaline, Limbic System Response, Intelligent Dialog, Vitals, and Exertions. Most interestingly, the new system's "Intelligent Dialog" will affect the game's scenes and includes three variations of dialogue based on whether Issac is healthy, fatigued, or injured. For example, if Issac is injured, he will ache while delivering his lines.
Though it was originally set to release this year, the live stream additionally revealed that the upcoming Dead Space remake is aiming to release in 2023, missing its original 2022 launch window. EA has pushed the project back to further polish and improve upon it, and to pave the way for new sequels in the future. Additionally, EA Motive has promised to do another developer update in May to give players a better glimpse at the Dead Space remake's art design.
The Dead Space remake's brand-new A.L.I.V.E. system and variations are expected to further immerse players with enhanced game audio and a never-before-seen horror experience. If executed well, the remake could serve as a return to the norm for AAA horror games and motivate other developers to implement similar gameplay elements, as the original Dead Space did years ago. Fans will have to wait a little longer to experience it but can expect more updates in the coming months.
EA Motive's Dead Space remake makes its way to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in early 2023.
