One Piece: Luffy is About to Unleash His Biggest Attack Yet, Literally

Warning contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1047!

Luffy has received a major power upgrade in the latest chapters of One Piece, but it seems like he is about to unleash his biggest attack yet, both in terms of power and size. This may be the final attack he needs to take down One Piece's strongest pirate, the seemingly unstoppable warlord Kaido. This would be incredibly impressive in its own right given Kaido’s incredible strength.

The latest chapters of One Piece have revealed that Luffy’s powers are very different from what everyone thought. Instead of having eaten the Gum Gum Fruit, it turns out that Luffy’s Devil Fruit is the Human Human Fruit Model: Nika. While the exact nature of this Fruit is still very mysterious, Luffy has been exploring the many abilities of the Fruit in the most recent chapters, having awakened the full power of the Fruit in chapter 1044. Instead of solely making his own body rubbery, Luffy can now cause everything around him to become rubbery, something he has used to both comedic and disturbing effect. He can also cause the world around him to obey a sort of cartoon logic, being able to easily perform such feats as running on air and grabbing onto lightning. And based on the end of the latest chapter, it appears that he can use his new powers to perform less surreal attacks with an incredible amount of force.

At the end of chapter 1047, Luffy is hiding from Kaido’s attacks among the storm clouds above Onigashima, after basically becoming One Piece's Thor. The fight has been going on for some time now and it seems like Luffy may be running out of options. But just when hope seems lost, Luffy cries out to Momonosuke asking him to move the floating island, as it will just get in the way of his next attack. As he is saying this, a gigantic fist emerges from the clouds, aiming straight for Kaido. While Luffy has used his new powers to increase his size before, this seems to be on a whole different scale entirely.

This also represents a different approach from Luffy’s standard finishing moves. Most of the time when defeating a major enemy, Luffy has attacked them with a rapid barrage of punches. This has been very effective in the past and has been enough to defeat many of Luffy’s greatest foes. But Kaido has shown himself to be resistant to these sorts of tactics. And he’s not alone in this. Other major threats on the Grand Line like Doflamingo also couldn’t be dealt with by increasing the quantity of punches alone. If this trend continues, then the power Luffy is putting into his massive punch may continue to be necessary as the Strawhats face more enemies of his caliber.

While Luffy may not use punches this massive in future fights, he will likely have to continue using attacks with this power level. And while awakening his Fruit has made Luffy's powers a lot more versatile, the majority of his new abilities don’t seem to be powerful enough to take someone like Kaido down. But if Luffy’s newest attack is actually as powerful as it seems then it may prove that he has the strength he will need to face One Piece’s future antagonists.
