An impressive cosplay of Liu Kang’s zombie form from Mortal Kombat Deception has caught the eye of Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, who recently shared a picture of it on social media. Boon is pretty well known for these kinds of posts, often dropping hints about possible DLC guest characters and sharing interesting tidbits about various aspects of the Mortal Kombat lore - including the origin of Scorpion’s iconic “Get Over Here” catchphrase. Ed Boon has even weighed in on fan opinions surrounding Mortal Kombat, such as a hypothetical Mortal Kombat “What If” series and the idea of The Miz playing Johnny Cage in a future MK film.
Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat's main protagonist Liu Kang has had many forms throughout the franchise’s 30 years of existence, from his humble beginnings as a Shao Lin monk tasked with preventing an invasion from the monstrous forces of Outworld, to a corrupted Revenant in the service of the evil Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat X, and finally Raiden’s successor as a fire-controlling Elder God at the conclusion of 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11. However, one of Liu Kang’s most infamous and bizarre variants came in 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception, which saw the champion of Earthrealm resurrected as an undead minion of a now-evil Raiden after Liu Kang was killed by Shang Tsung at the end of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. This Zombie version of Liu Kang would return in Mortal Kombat Armageddon, while his lingering spirit partnered with Kitana in an attempt to rejoin his body and become a noble protector of Earthrealm once more.
Zombie Liu Kang hasn’t been seen in Mortal Kombat since the series was rebooted in Mortal Kombat (2011), but series co-creator Ed Boon recently brought the undead warrior back from his grave by sharing an impressive cosplay image of Zombie Liu Kang from a costume convention on Twitter. Sure enough, the cosplayer captures Kang’s grey skin, yellowed teeth, and nunchuck-like chain weapons from Mortal Kombat Deception with a level of detail that makes it look like he jumped straight out of the game. Fans have commented on Ed Boon’s Twitter post to praise the cosplay in the image, share their own Liu Kang cosplays, and even pitch some ideas about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 12.
Sure enough, fans have been speculating about the next installment of the Mortal Kombat series ever since NetherRealm announced that it was finished adding new content for Mortal Kombat 11 last summer. Rumors and leaks have suggested that Mortal Kombat 12 will feature a massive roster of playable characters - albeit only the ones featured in the previous three Mortal Kombat reboot titles. However, there is still a relative lack of official announcements surrounding Mortal Kombat 12, to the point where Ed Boon himself has acknowledged fans that were disappointed that the game wasn’t revealed during Boon’s Hall Of Fame induction speech at this year’s DICE Awards.
While MK fans continue to look forward to the future of the series, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon continues to engage with devoted followers of the iconic fighting game franchise he helped to build by sharing fan art, cosplays, and guest DLC character requests from all across the internet. This includes an impressive cosplay of the infamous Zombie Liu Kang of the later Mortal Kombat games, who served as a memorable novelty in the twilight years before NetherRealm restarted the Mortal Kombat timeline to renewed success in the 2010s.
