Talking Ben The Dog: What The App Is & How To Use It

Talking Ben The Dog seems like a pretty generic app on the surface, but for whatever reason, it's topped the charts as one of the year's most popular applications for both iPhones and Android devices. But what exactly is the strange app, and how does it work? Keeping tabs on every smartphone app that's out there is an impossible task. New apps and games are released all the time, and because of this, there's always something new grabbing people's attention.

In 2022 alone, numerous apps have done precisely this. Locket Widget went viral in January 2022 as a fun way to place photos on friends' home screens. NoteIt also went viral for similar reasons, but instead of putting pictures on your friends' home screens, it allowed users to quickly share handwritten notes/doodles. And those are just two quick examples. People have also been buzzing about Happy Scale, Prequel, and Chai — just to name a few.

Another app that's especially popular is one called 'Talking Ben The Dog.' The app was first released over 10 years ago, but it quickly became one of the top free apps on the App Store in early 2022 following a software update. The premise of the app is pretty simple. As the title suggests, Ben is a talking dog that users can interact with. You can talk with Ben, tickle him, and conduct chemistry experiments in his laboratory. The app is very clearly marketed towards younger users and is recommended for kiddos aged 4-years and up. Talking Ben The Dog is developed by a company called Outfit7 Limited, which is also behind similar apps such as My Talking Tom, Talking Angela, and others.

Getting started with Talking Ben The Dog is pretty straightforward. After downloading and opening the app, users are asked to enter the year they were born. The app then asks for microphone access, which is required for users to talk with Ben. Once that's all done, you'll see Ben sitting in a chair with a few different controls around him. Talking with the app open like this will have Ben repeat what you say in a funny voice. You can also tap the phone next to Ben. He'll pick it up, and then if you say something, respond as if the two of you are having a phone call. Tapping Ben enough times makes him put down his newspaper, and you can tap on him to start tickling him.

Then there are the buttons all over the screen. The game controller icon is just a shortcut for Outfit7's other games. The bottle icon gives Ben a drink, the food icon gives him food to eat, and the dog icon next to that makes him burp. Tapping the test tube icon towards the bottom right takes users to Ben's laboratory. Users can then tap on different chemicals to mix them together and see what happens. Of course, all of this comes at a cost. Users can only play with a limited number of test tubes before they run out. Once out of test tubes, the only way to get more is by purchasing them or watching ads. You can unlock two more test tubes with each ad you watch or get unlimited access for $9.99.

And that's pretty much all there is to Talking Ben The Dog. It's a fairly simple app with funny animations and easy controls. It's far from the most advanced thing out there, but it should be enough to keep younger kids entertained. All of the in-app ads can be annoying and drag the app down, but as a free way to keep your kid busy for a few minutes, Talking Ben The Dog gets the job done.
